Bluebeards Castle

Bluebeards Castle

Bluebeards Castle. Piprimosca, Reus, Spain and at The Red Poppy Art House, San Francisco. 2008 and 2009.
Funded by the British Council. Produced by Growingnowhere and Pimprimosca.

Thanks to Emily Souter Johnson.

This is a story of Bluebeard rewritten based on Angela Carters “The Bloody Chamber” after Bartok/Balazs opera.

The performance occurs in two formats:
1) Bluebeard the film, an animation to the recorded story

2) telling the story live in a ‘bloody chamber lodge’

Lodge installation built from fennel and reeds. Covered with women’s used sheets, and a large blue tarpaulin. Groups of 20 people entered at night. “We crawled in, 20 of us, crammed together on nights of the performances. As I told the story in English, outside the lodge, a man translated it into Spanish”

Tessa Wills is a live artist

and choreographer with a background in music. She is from England, trained in central Europe and now lives in San Francisco. Her work elevates flaws and wounds as portals, ways of staging humanity, and often integrates eroticism to charge the pieces, which happen primarily on stage and video. Aside from the relentless pull of desire, her current practice is inspired by Hermits and professional mourning.
